There weren’t any local rap heroes for Vernon Parish, Louisiana, MC Joe Cool to pattern himself after, but that didn’t deter the 23-year-old upstart. He was too far from New Orleans to have any Cash Money connection, and hip-hop hot spot Baton Rouge wasn’t exactly nearby, so Joe just looked to his close buddies for support. And now it is all starting to pay off.
“I started rapping when I was like 15. All my friends rapped — I was just chillin’ in the background. I used to make funny songs and stuff,” Joe told Mixtape Daily during a February interview.
It was those “funny” little songs that then turned into hooks for more-developed local rappers. But at the urging of a friend, Mr. Cool decided to take his craft a bit more seriously. “I just kept going, and by the time I hit high school, I was like, this is something I want to pursue,” he said.
Joey dropped his first project, Mixtape for No F—in’ Reason, in March 2011 and then followed up with his most recent, Cooley Hi, at the top of this year. The majority of the tape is self-produced, a skill that JC picked up by necessity at a young age.
“By the time I hit 16, I really couldn’t find all of the beats that I wanted to go over, so I just started trying to make my own beats,” he explained.
The rap rookie is still climbing up the hip-hop ranks — he performed a few sets at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, last month — but he still has a way to go. On “Fame,” one of the tracks off of Cooley Hi, the Young MC ponders the money and recognition that awaits him. It’s not that he is trying to be a prima donna, he just believes in himself that much.
” ‘Fame’ was pretty much me feeling like I just know I’m supposed to be here. It’s waiting for me,” he said.

At the end of Dropbox’s “Hey, we have a huge new office!” event today in San Francisco, some reporters cornered CEO Drew Houston and asked him about the big cloud news of the week ? the launch of Dropbox competitor Google Drive. Initially, Houston said he didn’t have time to really comment, because he had to catch a flight (which almost sounds like an excuse to duck the question, but the Dropbox folks had actually mentioned the flight earlier). When pressed, he pointed out that there have been rumors about Google Drive since the beginning of time: “It’s been on the horizon since we founded the company.”

It’s time to shift around that summer vacation. Apple today announced that it will be kicking off this year’s World Wide Developers Conference on June 11th at San Francisco’s Moscone West. The event is set to run through the 15th, focusing on developing for OS X Mountain Lion and iOS, by way of 100-plus technical sessions and hands-on labs, letting the developer community work directly with Cupertino staff — and you can bet we’ll be there as well. In one picture, Bieber is seen kissing a dark-haired lady's hand. In addition to getting cozy with the pretty lady, Bieber jumps into a convertible on a set with a few muscle cars. </P><P> </P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a> </P><P> </P><P>If fans are worried about what girlfriend Selena Gomez might think of Bieber being affectionate with his onscreen co-star, they shouldn't worry. Gomez reportedly stopped by the set to visit her BF, according to <a href="http://www.gossipcop.com/justin-bieber-boyfriend-set-photos-selena-gomez-lookalike-pics-video/" target="_blank">Gossipcop.com</a>, and the pair shared in a few offscreen kisses. </P><P> </P><P>Justin has been hard <a href="/news/articles/1683042/justin-bieber-boyfriend-buzz-lightyear.jhtml">at work on his "Boyfriend" video</a> for a while now. And he made it clear to MTV News that despite the song's lyrics, he won't be donning any costumes in the Colin Tilley-directed video. "I won't be dressed up as Buzz Lightyear," he said. "I think there's some copyright issues; I can't use that." </P><P> </P><P>The new stills give fans another glimpse of what to expect from the video, which have up until now mostly been teases of the singer in shadow or with only a black backdrop behind him as women put their hands all over him. "The <a href="/news/articles/1682156/justin-bieber-explains-boyfriend-video.jhtml">concept of this video</a>, I mean, it's not like a steady concept," he said back in March. "It's not like 'Justin follows this girl to this spot.' No, it's a bunch of amazing scenes: like a fire scene, we have an ice scene. </P><P> </P><P>"It's kind of like bouncing back and forth," he said. "And then there's scenes of me and just a bunch of girl dancers, and just some great shots, great artistic shots, great shots of me smiling. Bill Buxton has spent most of his career getting between humans and computers. While his initial focus was on music and digital instruments, that eventually led to an interest in human-computer interaction, and pioneering work with multitouch systems and other user interfaces. He worked with the famed hotbed of innovation Xerox PARC in the late 1980s and early 90s, and was later Chief Scientist for software firm Alias Wavefront before claiming the same title at SGI Inc. when that company acquired the former in 1995. After a time running his own Toronto-based design and consulting firm, he moved on to Microsoft Research in 2005, where he continues to serve as the organization’s Principal Researcher.
We recently had a chance to pick his brain and get his thoughts on a range of issues, including state of design at Microsoft, the future of natural user interfaces, and whether we’re really entering a “post-PC” era.
